It’s all about patterns

Fewer Cards lets you securely share your information with the people you want to by scanning or tapping your card on their phone. Seamlessly your information is transferred to their phone. No transferring information from a paper card, no paper card to lose. The scan works with a QR code, but what’s happening when you hold the QR code up to a phone's camera?

Whether it's an iPhone’s camera, or a QR code reader, the phone can translate the QR codes pattern and read the data it's storing. The code might look random, but notice the identical squares in three of the corners. These are position detection patterns. It doesn’t matter if your card is upside down, or at a 45 degree angle, as long as the QR code is facing a reader it will be scanned.

The information you want to share is stored in squares called modules, but these aren’t the only squares outside the position detection pattern. There are other patterns such as timing and mask patterns.

When you put your card in front of someone's QR code scanner it looks for the distinctive position detection patterns, once it's found those corner squares it knows how the QR code is orientated. The white separator around these patterns allows the scanner to know where the position detection pattern ends and the information begins.

The scanner starts reading the QR code from the corner without a position detection pattern, the bottom right. It then scans upwards, two modules at a time until it hits a position detection pattern and then it scans down the code until it reaches the end of the code. It keeps scanning until it scans all of the code.

That’s it, once the scanner has read the code, the phone has access to the information contained on it. You’ve passed your information safely, securely, and easily.

So let Fewer Cards know what information you want to share. With a range of cards available, you will soon be sharing your information with a simple tap or scan.
